Earwax
Earwax also known as cerumen is a substance secreted within the outer ear canal. It’s valuable properties include lubrication and protection against foreign bodies and some forms of bacteria. Earwax is largely self-cleaning and often migrates out of the ear on its own. However, the ear can produce an excess of wax and skin which can become impacted and troublesome; further exacerbated by the use of cotton buds!
Symptoms of impacted wax can include:
- Pain or discomfort
- Conductive hearing loss due to complete blockage
- Irritation
- Dizziness
- Tinnitus
- Feedback/whistling from hearing aids
Treatments
All treatment options at Harmony are carried out under the superior clarity and magnification of our Clearwax iCLEARscope . This innovative video oto-endoscope provides a high definition and wide panoramic view of the ear canal and ear drum whilst performing wax removal.
Treatment options include:
Endoscopic Microsuction
Microsuction is now considered the gold standard in wax removal, surpassing antiquated methods such as irrigation. A quiet but effective suction device and sterile probe is used to gently, safely and hygienically remove troublesome earwax.
Endoscopic Instrumentation
Alternative tools are sometimes used to remove harder or drier pieces of wax or skin, these include:
- Jobson Horne probe
- St Bartholomew’s Ear hook
- Crocodile forceps
